Dark circles are quite unsightly and can be detrimental to an individuals confidence levels. There arent many people who know that dark circles are mainly hereditary and certain aspects like eye colour and hair type, dark circles are passed down from generation to generation. The genes that are related specifically to dark circles are the same genes that are responsible for weak capillaries specifically in the skin under the eye. The transparency of the skin under the eye is also generally inherited and can cause dark circles to look more prominent that normal.

There are a number or actual causes for dark circles other than the hereditary factors.

- Exposure to the sun can make dark circles even worse. Sunlightcauses the levels of melanin in the skin to the surface and this darkens it. The increased levels of melanin cause the pre-existing dark circles look even darker. One can notice the darker circles after a day at the beach or after spending some time in a tanning bed.

- Some people are extremely allergic to certain substances that present itself in the form of dark circles. Extensive research has shown that allergies and dark circles are definitely connected. Sometimes it is just a reaction. Though, most allergies cause itchy eyes which result in the individual rubbing their eyes which causes the dark circles o grow even darker.

- Age is another contributing factor and can make dark circles look even darker as the skin on the face becomes thinner as we age. The thinner the skin, the easier it is to see the dark circles and they get more obvious.

- Nutrition is an extremely important part of a healthy lifestyle and plays an important part in keeping dark circles at bay. This is not as common as the other causes, but it is known that a lack of vitamins can cause dark circles. A healthy, balanced diet is a good thing to have, but might not be the way to get rid of dark circles.

Overall, there are a number of causes that would make dark circles seem worse that they are and thousands of brands out there that claim they have the ideal product that would get rid of them for you. The choice is yours, of course; however one must remember that sometimes natural methods remain the most effective. They have the additional advantage of being safer on the skin.
